HOUSEPLANTS
Much peace. Today’s poetry prompt is:
Try writing a poem in which you describe something that cannot speak, and what it has taught or told you.
Here is my poem:
HOUSEPLANTS
By Farah Lawal Harris, 2026
They taught me that
sometimes the ones we love
die, but that’s alright.
It’s just part of life.
Through depression bouts,
they proved how
the resilient survive drought—
it’s our personality type.
And must importantly,
they taught me
that in order to thrive,
focus on what’s alive!
And that we need to feed on
fertilizer, sunshine, and water.
The shit makes us stronger—
so strong that we eventually outgrow
the conditions we once called home.
With them in my home,
I am never alone—
sometimes dormant,
but inevitably,
growing season comes.
