NEXT STOP (Poem)

NEXT STOP

By Farah Lawal Harris, 2025

Imagine two intellectual Brooklyn backpacker rappers

reciting 1970 words from Queen Toni Morrison

on and 88-Keys produced beat.

We as a people

have the unique ability to

remix what already exists

and make it exciting and relevant.

“Chasin after death

just to call ourselves brave.

Still living like mental slaves.”

Did the Mighty Mos Def and Talib Kweli

soberly sit in the studio deciphering

the tragedy of little Black girls like Pecola Breedlove

as a way to prepare us

to ride the Black Star line

all the way up north

to Brown-Skinned Lady love?

Written for National Poetry Writing Month #napowrimo
