SUMMER RENDEZVOUS
Much peace. Today’s poetry prompt is:
Today, pick a flower or two (or a whole bouquet, if you like) from this online edition of Kate Greenaway’s Language of Flowers. Now, write your own poem in which you muse on your selections’ names and meanings. If you’re so inclined, you could even do some outside research into your flowers, and incorporate facts that you learn into your work.
Here is my poem:
SUMMER RENDEZVOUS
By Farah Lawal Harris, 2026
Two little sprigs resembling
star-shaped miniature palm trees
appeared in my garden bed.
Through technology, I identified them as
Indian chickweed,
a “highly nutritious, edible wild green”
with small white flowers
that quickly self-seed.
According to “Language of Flowers”
Chickweed represents rendezvous.
It’s no wonder those two
springs slid under my Salvia “blue
butterfly,” wishing for a kiss
of sweet nectar,
itching to feel the touch
of wings flutter,
spreading its weak stems
to make love
to summer.
