THE UNICORN’S HORN

Much peace. Today’s poetry prompt is:

Try writing your own poem that uses an animal that shows up in myths and legends as a metaphor for some aspect of a contemporary person’s life. Include one spoken phrase.

Here is my poem:

THE UNICORN’S HORN

By Farah Lawal Harris, 2026

A unicorn’s horn

is like a Black woman’s braid

scrutinized, fried, dyed, laid to the side

not seen as the crown it is,

but rather a disturbance to be tamed

like lye to kinky coils and waves

that burns like flames, that’s why we say:

“We stay fly and hard to imitate.”
